You have a couple of youth training opportunities coming up in September. As the school year begins many Cub Scout Packs are actively looking for Boy Scouts to help out Den Leaders. If you are a First Class Scout or above and need to hold a leadership position for your next rank advancement, being a Den Chief is one way to earn it while allowing you to set an example for younger Cub Scouts to follow. Additionally, you are encouraged to attend the Oak Leaf Junior Leader Training course so that you can learn the basics of troop organization, planning and other leadership skills that all new junior leaders need to know before serving various troop leadership positions – such as Patrol/Assistant Patrol Leaders and Senior Patrol/Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders. Please note that if your families are planning to take a Fall Break trip that this course takes place during the first weekend of Fall Break. These courses have a nominal $5 and $30 charge to cover handout materials. The following link will take you to the Great Plains training website for more details and information on how to register http://www.greatplainsbsa.org/dnn/DistrictCommittees/Training/tabid/65/Default.aspx. Although you can register online for both courses, the Oak Leaf junior Leader Training has an expanded form that can be printed off of the website. Youth Training Schedules and Availability Please mark your calendars and register for the courses that fit your new junior leadership position in Troop 25.
As friendly reminder, I am also updating the training rosters so as you complete a training course (online or in person), please send me an email so I can mark you down for that specific class. If you need additional information about a particular training or registration, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks! Steve Bohn Troop 25 Training Chairman 972-491-1585
“Adventure, learning, challenge, and responsibility – the promise of Scouting is all this and more…..” This is a big, big promise. It is a promise to our boys we will help you keep by teaching you the things that you must know, be and do. Boys are looking for all of these, as well as opportunities to make new friends, to lead, to be of service, to do the right thing, and to learn how to make ethical decisions. Delivering the promise of Scouting is the main goal of that the Circle Ten Council and the Great Plains District provides in its year-round training and development program. You have heard the phrase – "Every Scout deserves a trained leader" – well we have the right course work available to suit your specific adult leadership role(s) within Troop 25. There are a number of training opportunities coming up in September. The major training events include the Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster training on Sept. 9th, which is followed up with the Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills held on the last weekend of Sept. and then the Fall 2006 Leadership Development Day is scheduled for Sept. 16th for multiple leader specific courses. All of these courses will be held on their respective dates at the Resurrection Lutheran Church located on the SE corner of Independence and Park across from Plano Senior High School. Most of the courses are free or have a nominal $5 or $15 charge to cover handout materials. The following link will take you to the Great Plains training website for more details and information on how to register http://www.greatplainsbsa.org/dnn/DistrictCommittees/Training/tabid/65/Default.aspx. You will note that the website has gone through a welcomed new look and feel. As you consider your options for the specific September training, the following is a brief description of the available courses, their objectives and scheduled timeslots: New Leader Essentials is one-half of the basic training for all new adult leaders. New Leader Essentials highlights the values, aims, history, funding and methods of Boy Scouting. Combined with leader-specific training (see below) this course builds the foundation for effective adult leadership. Troop Committee Training is the second-half of new leader training for Committee Members. This course focuses on the ways in which the chartering organization and committee support the troop and the roles that leaders take on the committee. A committee member is "trained" when they have completed New Leader Essentials and the Troop Committee Challenge. Troop 25 suggests that all new adult leaders, including those who plan to become Assistant Scoutmasters, first become active on our committee and learn about our troop. Conducting Troop Leader Training is for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters. It teaches them how to conduct training in their own units for Senior Patrol Leaders and Patrol Leaders. This course is geared towards how to help the Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster teach the Patrol Leader Counsel on how to be the Patrol Leader Counsel. Eagle Advisor Training is for troop advancement people to work with Eagle candidates to help them understand the Eagle Project and Board of Review processes. Merit Badge Counselor Training is for those individuals who want to serve as Merit Badge Counselors. It gives them details on the merit badge program and how to work with the boys. Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Training and Introduction to Outdoor Leaders Skills comprise the second-half of the new leader training for Assistant Scoutmasters. It is perfect and recommended for all “Trail to First Class” adult leaders. Together, these two courses form the core of how the troop is run and introduces the adult leader to the scout skills that are taught to our boys. A Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster is considered "trained" when they have completed New Leader Essentials, Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Training and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.
Training Schedules and Availability Please mark your calendars and register for the courses that fit your current or future adult leadership position in Troop 25. I would also appreciate if you can drop me an email to let me know what course(s) you plan to attend.
If you are new to the Boy Scouting program and your head is spinning with all of these options or you are pressed for time, please take advantage of the BSA’s Online Training Center to get the basics of what the Scouting Program has to offer your son by going to http://olc.scouting.org/ when ever your schedule can accommodate. It is available 24 hours a day on the web. The following two courses are highly recommended:
Youth Protection Training (YPT) is required of all adult leaders. You must take this course and maintain your YPT status in order to serve as a Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster in the troop. Committee Members and Merit Badge counselors who will regularly spend time with the boys on campouts, in service projects, or in merit badge sessions should also complete YPT. Adult leaders in Troop 25 need to take YPT at least once every 3 years.
